Tackling Your Small Business Social Media Strategy

Tackling Your Small Business Social Media Strategy

Social media is always a topic that comes up in our meetings. Every client wants help with social media. Why? As a small business owner, you have more things to juggle than you have hands to juggle with. How do you tackle the time management, and what do you post and where? Let’s take a look at a few tips for getting the most out of your social media marketing!

Define your audience. Who is your current customer or prospect? Where do they spend their time online. What defines who they are as a consumer. Honing in on your current audience versus your ideal audience can be an eye opener for many businesses. This also affects where you should be active.

Choose what platforms make sense for  your business. The truth is that you probably shouldn’t use all the existing platforms available. You likely don’t have the time to do it all and your audience may not be active on every platform. Find what fits and stick with it. You can always grow into other platforms later. Remember, it’s a crawl, walk, run approach!

According to Statista, Facebook is still the most popular social networking site as of September 2019. While the most popular may make sense for your business, you have to also look at who your audience is and where they spend their time.

Once you choose your platforms you need to complete your profile. More information is key!

Set goals. You need to set goals and objectives, things you want to achieve with your social media marketing strategies. SMART goals. It’s nothing new but it should be something you revisit as you plan for 2020.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Timely

Check out what your competitors are doing. It’s healthy to know what your competition is doing. Do you find yourself impressed with their efforts? Does their content represent their brand adequately? What hashtags do they use and are the working? What kind of content do they publish and when?

Get Organized. It is important that you create a calendar or invest in a platform to keep you organized. While many tools exist you need to find one that will help you schedule and look ahead so you have your days, weeks and months planned out. We recommend looking into these helpful platforms to stay organized and be able to track your progress.

Create great content. This is the most important part of social media marketing. Social media marketing is all about content sharing, and the best way to attract and convince your target audience to patronize you is through engaging content in the form of posts, articles, images and moving visuals.

This is often the biggest headache for many business owners… what does your audience currently like and follow? How can you relate that to your brand. Focusing on helpful & entertaining content, gives your followers a reason to pay attention to what you’re posting, and you give them a reason to keep coming back for more.

Don’t be afraid to get creative! Use graphics, emojis and hashtags that fit your brand and speak to your audience!

So what types of posts encourage engagement? According to Sprout Social, entertaining content is still key.

Remember that the type of content makes a big difference too. Consider the types that fit your goals as well as your brands message and culture. Video is huge and the number one consumed type of content out there. Consider adding this to your mix in 2020.
